Comets Qualify for Oregon Trail Tournament

Anaheim - 5/28/2006 - Based upon their high finish in the Oregon Trail qualifier today the So Cal Comets have qualified to play in the prestigious Oregon Trail Tournament this summer.  This qualification elevates the Comets to a higher level in the world of high school basketball.  Congratulations to the team and their coaches for the hard work to accomplish this achievement.

Comets Finish 3-1 in Oregon Trail qualifier

Without a true post player the So Cal Comets took a 3-1 record in the tournament at Orange County 5/27-5/29. The Comets started by playing the Salt Lake Metro and started fast by defeating them 53-39, with Tiffany Hurd leading the scoring with 28 points and 10 rebounds, and Mhia Vickers with 11 and 5 steals. Megan had 5 assists.

The second game later was also a victory over the San Diego Comets with a 56-39 victory. Tiffany led with 20 points, 15 by Mhiah Vickers, 7 by Molly, and 6 by Taryn. Megan Natelson had 9 assists and 3 steals. The defense was stifling leading the team to a runaway victory.

Our 3rd game was against a powerful tall Arizona Hype team who was also 2-0 coming into the early game Sunday morning and was going to the finals on Monday as well. The Comets started fast and led the way most of the game and was tied 21-21 at halftime. The game went to the final 14 seconds down by 1, but lost 43-39. Tiffany had 17 points, Molly and Mhia with 6, Megan had 5 assists and Mhia led with 8 rebounds. It was a nail biter the whole way until the bigger team overcame our changing defenses.

Last game on Monday was a rematch with the Golden State Heat, and the Comets wasted little time defeating them a second time 37-32. They shut down Tiffany with only 6 points, but everyone else stepped it up with 6 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 steals by Megan Nateslon, 7 points, 5 rebounds by Mhia Vickers, 7 points by Taryn Sherman, 7 points and 9 rebounds by Austin Lorentz, and 4 points from Molly. Defense was a huge factor in the win. It was a close game the whole way but the Comets came away from the tournament 3-1, and look forward to Bakersfield next week.

NATIONAL CHAMPS!

See More photos here...
Las Vegas – 6/26/2005 – The So Cal Comets club basketball team captured the YBOA national championship at the girls high school elite division on Sunday June 26th.  The Comets, coached by head coach Kenyon Dixon and assistant David Hanzy, went to Las Vegas knowing they would be fighting an uphill battle without a true center.

Facing teams from Philadelphia to Stockton the Comets proved the old adage that in basketball “quickness beats height” they beat their opponents, many having players over six feet, by using a suffocating defense that repeatedly frustrated their opponents causing turnovers that turned into easy baskets.

The Comets completed the tournament with a 5-1 record and advanced to the championship game by easily defeating the host Central Coast Swoosh in the semi-final game.  In the other semi-final the Stockton Lady Rebels had overpowered the Simi Valley Vikings, setting up a dramatic championship game between the two best teams.

The Comets defeated the Lady Rebels in a close contest, 31-29, surviving a desperate 3 point attempt by the Rebels at the buzzer that hit the heel of the rim and bounced away.  The Comets celebrated at mid-court winning their first ever national championship.

The comets are composed of Nicole Ackerman, Mhiah Vickers, Leah Heyl and Taryn Sherman of Westlake High School, Megan Natelson and Tiffany Hurd of Moorpark High School, Austin Lorenz of Thousand Oaks High School and Lauren Carson of La Reina High School.
